We believe there are quite a few people out there who would dismiss a ‘new’ sportsbook out of hand. Quite frankly, that’s foolish for a couple of reasons.

Firstly, we’ve tested a whole lot of bookies, and we’ve found that some newer ones genuinely do offer a better experience than more established brands. Just because a bookie has nailed its sponsorship deals, and therefore built a lot of brand awareness, does not mean it’s a good betting platform.

Secondly, just because the actual sportsbook is new, doesn’t mean that the people running it are. In Hopa, we find a perfect example. Yes, the sportsbook was only founded in 2019, but Hopa itself has actually been around since 2005 as a casino site. That is a lot of relevant online betting experience. They’re also part of ASG Ltd, who have several other similar brands on their books.

In short, however old or famous it is, every sportsbook must be evaluated on its own merits. That’s exactly what we’re going to do in this comprehensive Hopa review. Let’s get started.

New customers only. Max one £10 free bet. Qualifying bets must be placed at odds of 1/1 or greater. Paid as bonus token with min 4/5 odds required. Skrill, Neteller & Paypal not eligible. T&Cs apply. 18+

Hopa Sign Up Offer

The Hopa new customer offer is simply called ‘Sport Welcome Offer’, and is a ‘Bet X, Get Y’ deal. In this case, you are asked to deposit and bet at least £10 with your new account. Do so, and you will unlock a £10 Hopa free bet, also to be used on sports.

That all sound pretty straightforward, but let’s take a good look at the terms and conditions anyway:

  • Minimum deposit and bet to activate free bet is £10
  • Deposits using PayPal, Neteller, Paysafe and Skrill are ineligible
  • Minimum odds for qualifying bet are evens (2.0)
  • Qualifying bet must be settled within 14 days of registration
  • Free bet awarded automatically (no opt-in required)
  • Free bet must be used on sports, at minimum odds of 4/5 (1.8)
  • Free bet stake will not be returned with winnings
  • Free bet expires 14 days after being awarded

And that’s it! Most important by far here is that there are no wagering requirements on the free bet. Most newer bookies have these in place, with some requiring you to bet through your winnings a ridiculous number of times before making a withdrawal. Hopa, by contrast, simply let you place the bet, withdraw any winnings, and be on your way. They’re essentially trusting the customer to come back, and – in turn – generating a lot of goodwill from the beginning.

In terms of value, while it obviously doesn’t compete with the ‘Bet £10, Get £30’ deals that bigger bookies can offer, this is still a good proposition. The odds for the qualifying wager and free bet are both fair, and – assuming you start with the minimum £10 – you’re still doubling your spending power from the off.

Hopa Ongoing Promotions (Updated On: June 2020)

We were extremely impressed with the simplicity of the opening Hopa offer, which creates a tremendous first impression. Can Hopa maintain this momentum with some tasty ongoing promotions?

Well the short answer is… no! Casino users have a few different Hopa promotions to choose from, including an entire VIP program. Sports bettors, by contrast, have literally one deal on offer.

That’s a shame, because that single sports promotion is actually highly respectable. It’s a classic acca insurance offer, in which your winnings from multiples bets are given a boost – called a ‘Hopaboost’ here – with the boost’s size depending on the number of selections. With a minimal four selections you’ll get a 4% boost, five nets you 7%, six 10%, and so on, all the way up to a massive 77% for a 15-fold.

There are no nasty restrictions to detract from this offer’s appeal, either. Minimum odds per selection are only 1/5, the maximum you can get from a boost is a hefty £11,000, and there are apparently no restrictions on the frequency with which you can boost your accas.

The lack of offers here is certainly frustrating. The Hopa sportsbook isn’t exactly brand new, after all: it’s been around long enough to have more than one ongoing promotion in place. Still, the quality of this acca boost, combined with that of the welcome offer, gives us hope for the future.

Hopa Football Features

To become truly successful, it’s crucial that a sportsbook nail a few absolute fundamentals. Hopa already ticked one of these boxes with their excellent welcome offer, but football features are just as important when it comes to bringing in the masses.

We were pleased to see that football has its own dedicated section on Hopa, which follows a simple but effective layout. There are four main areas within the section: Daily Match List, Top Leagues, All Leagues and In-Play. All are pretty self-explanatory, and you can move between them with the simple click of a button. Each individual area is laid out in an intuitive manner too. Go to Daily Match List, for example, and the markets are sorted in order of general popularity: Premier League at the top, Championship below, and so on. If you want to instantly find a specific event or league, you can alternatively use the search function, which is ever-present to the top-left of your screen.

The range of competitions supported here is equal to whatever you’d expect to find from a much larger sportsbook. Both domestic and international competitions from all around the world are in place, with in-play, pre-match and – for the bigger contests – outright bets all available. Delve into a match’s individual markets, and – again – you’ll find every bet type you could realistically hope for. Everything from 1/X/2 and Over/Under Goals, to Asian Handicaps and higher-risk Specials is on offer.

It’s no surprise to learn that live streaming is not available on Hopa. Still, in-play is clearly a major priority, and even less-heralded matchups have live stats and a ‘Match-Tracker’ visualisation tool available. Odds update fairly frequently, and there’s also a Hopa cash out feature, as you might expect.

Other Betting Markets

Football might be the biggest betting sport by far, but to achieve true mass appeal, all sportsbooks need to offer a broad range of betting markets.

Hopa do exactly that. There are over 20 other betting markets available, which might not sound like a huge number, but all the major bases really are covered. Crucially, horse racing is one of those markets, with events from the UK & Ireland and further afield open for betting. The likes of boxing, rugby, cricket, golf, tennis, and motor racing are also in place, as are American leagues like the NFL and NBA, and more niche markets like table tennis round out this offering nicely.

Mobile Betting Options & App

Sports betting has been pretty darn popular for a long time, but – in the past couple of decades – two innovations have increased this growth exponentially. First was the internet, naturally, and second was the rise of smartphones. Nowadays, ‘on-the-go’ may well be threatening more traditional computer betting as the dominant form of wagering.

We were a little surprised, therefore, to find that there is no Hopa Android app available for sports bettors, nor is there an iOS version. We understand that this is a pretty new sportsbook… but we’ve seen other new bookies launch with an app already in place. Some launch with only an app available, foregoing a desktop sportsbook entirely! In this context, it’s pretty disappointing that Hopa still haven’t bothered to provide their bettors with this fairly basic functionality.

In lieu of an actual Hopa app, of course, the mobile version of the main site becomes even more important. And, while we don’t want to condone the lack of such an important feature… we must admit that the Hopa mobile site really is excellent.

The interface scales perfectly to fit the smaller screen size of a phone or tablet, with the text an easily ‘readable’ size, and the black, grey and blue colour scheme looking fantastic. Navigation has been adapted in an intuitive way, with a collapsable menu containing all the major sections – Login, Promotions, Chat, and so on – and a sliding menu within the sports section helping you to find the market you’re looking for. Everything loads exceptionally quickly, including in-play markets, and we experienced no errors or crashes of any kind.

Overall then, while we would always prefer to have an actual app as an option, the Hopa mobile website is a more-than-adequate substitute.

Security

New or old, large or small, almost all sportsbooks have one thing in common – they give precious few details on their security measures! And… you’ll doubtless be shocked to learn that Hopa follow this pattern too. Still, they do at least have a ‘Security’ section, clarifying that 128-bit SSL encryption is in place to protect the transmission of all sensitive data, and that Hopa’s servers are protected by a robust firewall.

Any lingering doubts such as ‘Is Hopa legit?’ can be put to bed by the licenses which are in place. Hopa have managed to secure them with both the United Kingdom Gambling Commission and Malta Gaming Authority, which should give you all the peace of mind you need.

Opening an Account

Registration processes tend to be so slick with modern bookies, that we’d actually be more surprised if we came across one which wasn’t streamlined and user-friendly. Fortunately, Hopa lives up to the current, high standards here.

Signing up is extremely easy, with only two, straightforward steps in place. At the first, you simply enter your email address, username and password. Next, you provide a few personal details, including your name, date of birth, and home address. You can also set your preferred currency and marketing preferences here. Once that’s done, just click the big green ‘Open Account’ button… and you’re already finished!

Banking Options

While we certainly believe in giving newer bookies a chance, this is one of the biggest areas in which the older, more established sportsbooks tend to be superior. Unfortunately, that’s largely the case here.

With only Visa/Mastercard, PayPal, Skrill and Paysafecard available, the range of payment options on Hopa is pretty small. That does still include some heavy hitters, though, with PayPal a particularly welcome inclusion. The minimum deposit amount for all methods is £10, all payments are processed instantly, and there are no fees attached.

When making a Hopa withdrawal, both Paysafecard and – strangely – Mastercard are unavailable. No fees are charged for withdrawals, and they can take between three days and a week to process, depending on the method.

Customer Support

Whatever the size or age of your sportsbook, having high quality customer support is non-negotiable. Your customers should always be able to solve any issues they might have in a timely manner.

Once again, we were very impressed with what we found here. The Hopa customer service offering really is great, with every major contact option – namely phone, email and live chat – in place. The coverage is excellent too, with the Hopa contact team available seven days per week, from 06:00 – 23:00 GMT.

The non-direct support on offer is also solid. There are both ‘Help’ and ‘FAQ’ sections available, with the latter being much more useful. It’s split into 11 different sections, which can be quickly scanned via a handy search function, and the answers are concise and informative.

Hopa Company Details

Hopa are best known for their online casino operation, which kicked off all the way back in 2005. Precious few details are available about the brand since then, but – having been running for over 15 years now – they’ve clearly been successful!

In 2019, Hopa made the decision to add a sportsbook to their offering, which was created by industry veterans Aspire Global International Ltd. Hopa are owned by ASG Technologies Ltd, which also operate a number of other gambling sites including Karamba and Campeonbet. Like their parent company, Hopa’s offices are based in Malta.

Hopa Bottom Line

In our introduction, we said that more people should give newer bookies a chance. This Hopa review has served as a perfect example of why that is.

If you didn’t know this sportsbook was so new, you surely wouldn’t have guessed it. Visually and functionally, the whole interface is sleek, modern and professional. Every major betting market is covered, and the customer service is equal to that of a much larger sportsbook. Even the lack of a dedicated app is offset by the quality of the mobile website.

Hopa isn’t perfect, with the lack of ongoing promotions and banking options both drawbacks. But then, what sportsbook is perfect? One thing is for sure: there is easily enough here for you to sign up, stick a tenner in your account, utilise the excellent Sport Welcome Offer… and simply take things from there!
