There’s a natural crossover between sportsbooks and casinos. Both are obviously gambling-related, and – in order to be successful – both need to provide their users with similar benefits: a wide range of markets, quality customer service, easy deposit and withdrawal methods, and so on.

It’s not hard to see why so many companies offer both sports betting and casino games, and Mr. Play are becoming the latest outfit to do just that. Having only created their online casino in 2017, Mr. Play are already launching a sportsbook to sit alongside it. In our comprehensive Mr. Play review, we’ll evaluate whether this is simply a way to drive more business towards the casino, or the sportsbook is good enough to compete with its more seasoned competitors.

Mr. Play Bookie Sign Up Offer

Given that Mr. Play’s sportsbook launched extremely recently, this is a crucial time for them. Generating early momentum is the best way for any new bookie to ensure they stick around for the long haul. Having an appealing welcome offer is naturally an excellent opportunity to ensure this is the case.

We’re pleased to say that Mr. Play’s imaginatively-titled ‘Sport Welcome Offer’ fits the bill nicely. It’s easy to understand, simply requiring you to deposit and bet through £10 in order to claim a £10 free bet.

Here are the main T’s & C’s for the Mr. Play new customer offer:

  • First deposit must be at least £10
  • Deposits made using Neteller, Paysafe or Skrill 1-Tap are ineligible
  • Qualifying bet must be £10 or more, at odds of evens (2.0) or greater
  • Maximum free bet amount is £10
  • Free bet must be used within 14 days of being awarded
  • Free bet must be used at odds of 4/5 (1.80) or higher

There’s really nothing here to catch you out. While it’s a little annoying to have minimum odds for the free bet in addition to the qualifying wager, those odds are certainly reasonable. There’s every chance of winning an evens bet to start off with, and a further wager with your £10 Mr. Play free bet at 4/5, thus netting you a very tidy profit!

Overall, while it can’t quite rival the best welcome offers in the business, this is a very respectable promotion indeed.

Mr. Play Sports Ongoing Promotions

With their high quality welcome offer, Mr. Play certainly creates a very good first impression – exactly what the doctor ordered, for a brand new bookie! Unfortunately, though, this momentum is immediately halted by a lack of ongoing Mr. Play promotions.

While there are quite a few available for the casino section, there is literally one Mr. Play offer (aside from the new customer deal) available on the sportsbook at the time of writing. That’s particularly annoying because the promotion which is in place is actually pretty good!

It’s called PlayBOOST (Mr. Play really need to work on their naming), and it’s designed to boost returns on your accumulators. To use it, you simply need to put together an acca of at least four selections, at entirely reasonable odds of 1/5 (1.20). With those four selections you’ll automatically net a 4% boost, with the percentage increasing dramatically as you add more. Six selections gets you an extra 10%, eight gets you 20%, ten gets you 30%, and the maximum of 15 selections grants a ridiculous 77% boost.

Mr. Play are clearly capable of putting together a good ongoing promotion… and that actually makes it much more frustrating that they haven’t created more of them! Given that they’ve just launched, this surely would have been the perfect time to have an array of enticing deals on offer. As it is, if you’re not a fan of accumulator betting then there’s nothing here for you.
Security

In classic fashion, there’s very little information available regarding Mr. Play’s security measures. They do confirm that 128-bit SSL encryption is in place (as you’d expect from any modern bookie), and that their server is protected by ‘the latest firewall’. Aside from that tidbit, you won’t find much detail here.

Any questions such as ‘is Mr. Play legit?’, though, can easily be put to bed by their licenses. Mr. Play is licensed with both the Malta Gaming Authority and the United Kingdom Gambling Commission, which means they definitely adhere to industry standards of safety and security.

Mr. Play Football Features

Even if your casino section has already proved a success – as is the case with Mr. Play – there’s still no guarantee of success when adding a sportsbook to the mix. One way to massively boost your chances, though, is to ensure your football features are up to scratch.

Football has its own dedicated section on Mr. Play, which isn’t the case with every bookie. The layout of that section is fairly standard, but is effective nonetheless.

It’s split into areas for Daily, Top Leagues, League List and In-Play. Daily shows you all the imminent games that day, which you can sort by league or kickoff time. Top Leagues – as the name suggests – displays the upcoming matches in the biggest competitions: EPL, Champions League, La Liga, and so on. League List allows you to access… basically any major football competition on the planet!

Within each competitions, you’ll find both match odds and outright bets; competition winner, top scorer, and so on. The markets for betting on a match are also extensive, and range nicely from the basics – Over/Under Goals, Double Chance, etc. – to more creative props like a player to hit the woodwork, or score from outside the box.

Both in-play betting and a Mr. Play cash out feature are available. Odds for live matches are updated extremely frequently, although the speed at which your bets are both placed and withdrawn could be improved. This minor annoyance is somewhat offset by a visualisation tool, though, which helps keep you abreast of the action. While we’d love to see live streaming of matches added at some point, this tool serves as a reasonable stand-in.

Mr. Play have done a fine job with their football section. Fans of betting on the beautiful game are ably catered-for here.

Other Betting Markets

While its football section will undoubtedly see the most action, any self-respecting sportsbook must also serve the interests of fans of other sports too. Mr. Play already does an excellent job of this. In fact, the range of markets on offer here is startling, considering the bookie’s relative youth.

All the usual suspects are present and correct with plenty of events, including tennis, golf, rugby, cricket, boxing, and – pleasingly – horse racing. In addition, major American markets like the NFL, NBA and MLB are all supported, as are speedway and e-sports. Whatever your sporting fancy, you’ll likely find that you’re able to bet on it at Mr. Play… within reason, obviously!

Mobile Betting Options & App

For the most part, the Mr. Play sportsbook is actually well ahead of the curve, when you consider how new it is. One area in which the developers really do drop the ball, however, is with the mobile features.

There is no Mr. Play Android app currently available, nor is there an iOS version. That’s disappointing, as it always is when a sportsbook fails to provide this service, as really an app should be a fundamental part of any bookie’s offering nowadays.

What’s worse, though, is that it doesn’t seem as if this situation will be rectified any time soon. Mr. Play have had an online casino since 2017, but have no app currently available for that either. We believe there was briefly an Android version available, but that has disappeared now. Unfortunately, this suggests we won’t be getting an app for the sportsbook in the foreseeable future.

The situation is somewhat saved by the Mr. Play mobile website. It doesn’t load particularly quickly, but – once it has – the site is certainly serviceable. The visual appearance is identical to that of the desktop site, and the layout is very similar too. In fact, the only noticeable difference is that the menu of sports markets is at the top on the mobile site, rather than to the left. While it takes a moment for the site to get going in the first place, the actual placing of bets – whether upcoming or in-play – is swift enough.

Opening an Account

It goes without saying that any bookie should go out of their way to make it as quick and easy as possible for new customers to sign up. Pleasingly, Mr. Play do indeed provide a nicely streamlined registration process.

The whole thing consists of only two main steps. At the first stage you enter your email address and choose a username and password. Next you provide a few personal details, including your name, address and date of birth. After that you simply click the big ‘Open Account’ button… and you’re done! In all, registration takes barely a minute to complete, which is fantastic.

Banking Options

Mr. Play don’t provide the widest range of deposit methods in the world, but all the heavy hitters are supported. Your options for making a payment are Visa and Mastercard, PayPal, Neteller, Skrill, Skrill 1-Tap, and Paysafe. The minimum deposit for all methods is an industry standard £10, and all payments are processed instantly.

Annoyingly, you are actually charged a fee for making credit card deposits. It’s 2.5%, meaning a regular £20 deposit would actually cost you £20.50. Obviously that’s not a huge amount, but this is still something which most bookies (thankfully) have stopped doing nowadays.

The same methods are available for making a Mr. Play withdrawal, except for Paysafe, and these are processed within 3-8 working days. Incredibly there’s no option to make a manual withdrawal. Instead, you literally have to contact a support agent and specifically request that they make it for you.

Customer Support

This is one area in which we’ve seen new bookies drop the ball time and again. That’s understandable – it takes time to put a good customer service department together – but it’s hardly desirable.

Fortunately, we have no such issue with the Mr. Play customer service. The support team is available from 06:00 to 23:00 GMT, seven days per week. That really is brilliant coverage, and ensures you’ll rarely be waiting for help. The Mr. Play contact options are excellent too, and include live chat (which is always welcome), phone and email.

Even the FAQ section is impressive, which is something we rarely find with newer brands. There’s a lovely long list of entries, ranging from basics like ‘How do decimal odds work?’ to more complex questions about deposits and withdrawals, and the answers are succinct and direct. Literally the only issue we found was the search function, which wasn’t working at the time of testing, but that will surely be fixed soon.

Mr. Play Company Details

Sportsbooks don’t come much newer than Mr. Play’s, which was launched in late September 2019. As we’ve touched upon already, though, it comes with plenty of pedigree thanks to its connection with Mr. Play’s casino, which has proved a success since being founded in 2017.

Mr. Play is part of a joint venture, but the majority of it is owned and operated by Aspire Global, an iGaming platform provider founded in 2005. Along with financial backing, Aspire also provide the sportsbook’s technology and customer support. It will come as no surprise to learn that both they and Mr. Play are based in tax-friendly Malta.

Mr. Play Bottom Line

Like all of our evaluations, this Mr. Play review has been designed to give an honest and balanced view. While we’ve picked out several criticisms, therefore, we have also noted plenty of times that these are generally excused by the bookie’s youth. No sportsbook is launched as a completely flawless platform, instantly ready to dethrone the industry’s titans. They must all be improved upon over time.

In this context, Mr. Play’s sportsbook is already very impressive indeed. They’ve nailed most of the basics, like football features and the welcome offer, and the customer service – both direct and indirect – is excellent.

That said, there are certainly areas which must – and hopefully will – be improved. Primary examples are the lack of both ongoing promotions and a mobile app. More minor frustrations – like the need to manually request withdrawals – should be ironed out too.

All in all, this is certainly a bookmaker to keep your eye on for the future. There’s already enough here to provide efficient, reliable betting, though, so we have no hesitation in recommending you take advantage of the Sport Welcome Offer, and claim your £10 free bet now.
